Republican Convention

After hearing from the latest Republican Convention about how well our country is doing, how employment is way up, how jobs have been created, and how prosperous we all are, I read in The Times (Aug. 20) the following items:
1. The plans for reorganization at GTE Corporation stirred uneasiness among some of GTE’s 101,000 telephone division employees, who are awaiting news of how many jobs will be cut.
2. Polaroid warned its employees of staff layoffs if voluntary incentives don’t work.
3. The Federal Home Loan Bank Board announced Aug. 19 its biggest financial rescue effort ever, which may cost $5.5 billion for eight Texas savings and loans.
4. Continental Airlines said it will lay off 900 managers, pilots, flight attendants and ground employees.
5. The GM unit in Bristol, Conn., will lay off 330 workers.
George Bush, where are you?
