Local News in Brief : Bradley Asks Cut in Sewage Toxins

Share

Neighboring cities that use the Los Angeles sewer system should be made to reduce the amount of industrial toxic wastes allowed to contaminate their sewage, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley said Monday.

The cities--the largest are Glendale, Burbank, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills--contribute toxic heavy metals to the sewage flow that Los Angeles treats. The heavy metals reduce the effectiveness of sewage treatment and contaminate the sludge buried in landfills.

Bradley said he would ask the City Council to hire 17 inspectors to investigate the sources of heavy metals, such as mercury, lead and cadmium. The toxic wastes also come from industries within Los Angeles, but the city has greatly reduced contamination from those sources, Bradley said.
