San Diego police arrested a man Monday afternoon believed to be responsible for six bank robberies in the past month in Pacific Beach and La Jolla, a police spokesman said.

A witness to a robbery at California First Bank on University Avenue in East San Diego called police and gave them the number of the taxi used as a getaway car, spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Police tracked down the cab and arrested the passenger, James Whitmarsh, 23, of San Diego in the 2800 block of Pacific Highway.

Police say Whitmarsh is responsible for robberies at branches of Wells Fargo, Home Federal, Coast Savings & Loan, and Great American First Savings, and for an attempted robbery at an Imperial Savings, all in the Pacific Beach and La Jolla areas.

In each incident, police say, a man handed the teller a note demanding 100-, 50- and 20-dollar bills. Police said he got away with a total of $10,000.
