A four-day festival celebrating the independence of Western Samoa and the 88-year relationship between American Samoa and the United States will begin today in Carson.

The Samoan Flag Day Celebration, which will be launched with a 10 a.m. prayer at Victoria Park on East 192 Street, will feature traditional Samoan food and festivities, including tug-of-war, banana-paring and coconut-grating contests.

On Saturday, local community leaders, called matais, will don traditional garb for a 9 a.m. ceremony honoring American Samoa Gov. A. P. Lutali, Assemblyman Dick Floyd (D-Gardena), and other city and county representatives.
