Driver of Stolen Car Charged in Attempt to Run Down Deputy
Felony charges were filed Friday against the 18-year-old driver of a stolen car who allegedly attempted to run over a sheriff’s deputy, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Fred Cook.
Cook said that Sheriff’s Deputy James Bald shot a passenger in the car when it came toward him.
The driver, Lloyd Grant of Carson, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, possession of stolen goods and grand theft of an automobile. Cook said that prosecutors are preparing similar charges against Arland Lewis, 18, of Torrance, the passenger.
Grant is accused of stealing a 1978 Buick and attempting to run down Bald at General Scott Park in Carson, Cook said.
The incident occurred Tuesday when deputies--unaware that the Buick had been reported stolen--tried to stop the car after it allegedly ran a traffic signal at Avalon Boulevard and Scottsdale Drive, Cook said. The car sped off, leading deputies on a mile-long chase to the park where the car with the two suspects was cornered.
Grant allegedly aimed the car at Bald who had ordered the suspects from the car at gunpoint, Cook said. The deputy, who was standing about 15 feet away, dodged the car and fired six shots, two of which hit Lewis, Cook said.
Lewis was reported in stable condition Friday in the jail ward at County-USC Medical Center. Grant is being held without bail in the Carson jail.
