Two brief notes from Broadway this morning: The current Phantom of the Opera, Tonywinner Michael Crawford, becomes unmasked for good Oct. 8, when he’s leaving the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical version of “The Phantom of the Opera.” Crawford may play the role in the Los Angeles company of “Phantom,” but nothing’s set. Meanwhile, opera singer/actor Timothy Nolen will replace Crawford in the Broadway cast. And quite a bit further uptown from the theater district, comedian Jackie Mason will do a different sort of service for his audience: He will serve as cantor at services Sunday for the first night of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, at Congregation Ansche Chesed on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Mason, an ordained rabbi, offered to serve as cantor to help raise money to renovate the 60-year-old synagogue, according to Sarah Jacobs, Ansche Chesed program director.
