The broiling temperatures and high humidity that plagued San Diegans earlier this week will give way to cooler days and brilliant blue skies over the weekend, the National Weather Service reported.

The mercury, which reached a scorching 107 degrees last Sunday and broke records through the Labor Day weekend, will be markedly lower this weekend, forecaster Dan Atkins said.

“Thursday was a little cooler than the norm for this time of year,” Atkins said. “We were 4 degrees shy of the seasonal temperature of 77. We can expect this cooling trend to continue through Sunday.”

A marine air flow pushing in from the coast is responsible for keeping the weather fair except for some minimal night and morning low clouds, Atkins said. Humidity levels will be near normal in the afternoons after the clouds burn off.

The forecast calls for coastal highs from 73 to 78 degrees today and Saturday, and overnight lows from 63 to 68.

The surf is 2 to 4 feet and the water temperature of the ocean is 70.

Inland areas will have the hottest temperatures in the county, with highs from 80 to 88 degrees and lows from 58 to 66, forecasters say.

Possible afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains are in the forecast through Saturday. Daytime highs of 78 to 86 are predicted and overnight lows of 56 to 64.

High temperatures in the desert will reach 100 to 108, cooling at night to 70-78.
