Former Memphis State basketball coach Dana Kirk received unreported salary bonuses from a university booster club and worked numerous deals for extra income that he avoided reporting to the Internal Revenue Service, federal prosecutor Hickman Ewing Jr. told a federal court jury in Memphis.

“He was a man who constantly had his hand out to make money,” Ewing said.

In turn, Ewing said, Kirk gave money to former Memphis State center Keith Lee, who led the Tigers into the national rankings.

Kirk, 53, is on trial on charges of tax evasion, reporting false tax statements and obstruction of justice. He was fired by Memphis State two years ago, shortly before he was indicted by a grand jury.
