A Costa Mesa man was struck and killed Thursday night as he attempted to run across the San Diego Freeway in El Toro.

Domingo Martinez Sanchez, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Officer Ken Daily, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred about 10:10 p.m. as a Dodge van was traveling north on the San Diego Freeway near Lake Forest Drive. Suddenly, Sanchez ran onto the freeway from east to west, Daily said.

“He ran directly into (the driver’s) path. She applied the breaks, which caused her to swerve and she struck him on the left side of his body, throwing him 70 feet,” Daily said.

The driver then lost control of the van, which veered off the right side of the road and into a fence. She was not injured.

Daily said no car had been found in the area and there was no evidence to indicate why Sanchez was there on foot. The accident is under investigation.
