A 39-year-old Newhall man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after his truck slammed into a car in Sylmar Friday, seriously injuring him and two other people, Los Angeles police said.

The accident occurred about 2:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of San Fernando Road and Polk Street in Sylmar, Officer R.E. Rives said.

John W. Arman, the driver of the truck, and Harold Smith, 50, a passenger, both suffered serious injuries and were taken to Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar, Rives said.

Their conditions were not immediately available, a hospital spokesman said.

Arman was hospitalized under police custody, and charges are expected to be filed against him when he recovers, Rives said.

David E. Eagleton, the driver of the car that was hit by Arman’s truck, was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman said he was in critical condition.

Arman was traveling north on San Fernando Road when he collided with Eagleton, who was attempting to turn left onto San Fernando from Polk, Rives said.
