Hicks Captures the Main Event at Speedway Race

Gary Hicks of Glen Avon won the four-lap main event in the fifth and final round of the U.S. National Championships speedway motorcycle qualifing Friday in front of 3,489 at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Alan Christian of Huntington Beach was second, Billy Hamill of Monrovia third and Brad Oxley of San Clemente fourth.

Steve Lucero of Riverside won the consolation main event. Louis Kossuth of Brea was second, Dubb Ferrell of Whittier third and Ed Castro of Ojia fourth.

Riders qualifying for the national championships are: Sam Ermolinko of Corona, Robert Pfetzing of Garden Grove, Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa, Lucero, Ferrell, Hicks, Hamill, Oxley, Eddie Ingels of Auburn, Christian, Bart Bast of Corona, Scott Brown of Corona, Phil Collins of Newport Beach, Greg Hancock of Costa Mesa, Jim Sisemore of Auburn and Kossuth.
