The blanket-wrapped body of a baby girl was found Sunday in a planter box in front of the city’s main post office, authorities said.

It was unknown how the infant died or how long she had been dead, said FBI Special Agent Steve Jenks.

A man walking by the post office on Stevenson Street between 6th and 7th streets about 1:30 p.m. spotted a baby blanket in a planter, looked in the planter, saw the infant and called police, Jenks said.

The age of the baby, who was wearing a diaper, was estimated at newborn to four weeks. There was no sign of trauma, Jenks said.

The San Francisco Police Department also is investigating the case. The San Francisco coroner’s office was scheduled to perform an autopsy today.
