In response to Charles Hillinger’s story (“All of Las Vegas Turned on by the ‘Flashlight’ ” Part I, Sept. 14) about the sculpture on the campus at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas:

Thomas Wright’s comment that the “Flashlight” symbolizes a torch of learning, a shining light, a symbol of what the school is all about, etc. leaves me wondering about the school’s philosophy. That flashlight isn’t shedding much light, if any at all. It’s upside down. If he were the dean of engineering, for example, instead of the dean of arts and letters, he might have realized that the only thing it could be illuminating would be the underside of China!
