A spill of an unidentified toxic chemical in a residential area made several people ill and forced the evacuation of 30 residents of the tiny Kern County town of Tupman, west of Bakersfield, authorities said. At least five people were treated when they complained of dizziness, nausea and breathing difficulties after the chemical was discovered. The residents were sent to an evacuation center and allowed to return home after a hazardous materials crew cleaned up the spill.
