Local News in Brief : Petitions Oppose Waste Plant Plans

The Los Angeles Unified School District board has promised to send Gov. George Deukmejian a stack of petitions containing more than 5,000 signatures from Southeast Los Angeles residents who oppose plans to build a hazardous waste treatment facility in Vernon near their homes and schools.

Assemblywoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Los Angeles) and several Huntington Park High School students and teachers urged board members to deliver the documents to Deukmejian and show that they support efforts to block construction of the plant, which is proposed by the Pennsylvania-based Chem-Clear Corp.

The petitions ask that the state Department of Health Services withhold approval of the project until an environmental impact report is prepared. Chem-Clear wants to build the Vernon plant less than 1,000 feet from Huntington Park High School.
