The Pledge of Allegiance Issue in the Presidential Campaign
Bush has really taken Dukakis to task for vetoing some legislation mandating that schoolteachers conduct the Pledge of Allegiance in this classrooms or be fined if they did not. How unpatriotic, he says. Yet Dukakis had little choice, for the legislation had been judged unconstitutional, and he had taken an oath of office to uphold the Constitution.
Did Bush remember that he had taken such an oath when he was involved with undercover aid to the Contras, or dickering with the Iranians to sell weapons, or the recently disclosed propaganda activity in the National Security Council to mislead the American public and Congress about the Administration’s Central American policies?
I wonder who is the better patriot? The one who upholds and abides by the law, or the one who subverts it to his own agenda.
