Time to Consider Railroad Lines
I applaud The Times for writing about the rail lines through the San Fernando Valley. I think it is about time city planners consider the existing rail lines for commuter travel.
The two Southern Pacific main lines through the Valley are in a good position to serve the Valley and beyond, such as the Simi and Santa Clarita valleys. The Southern Pacific Burbank branch is a viable choice for a light-rail line considering the cost of that right-of-way purchase verses a double deck on the Ventura Freeway.
Those who are opposed to rail transit would like to forget that the railroads were here before most of the population. And the paranoid fear of excessive noise caused by a light-rail system running through the neighborhoods is just not justified. We must consider our most reasonable resources for our public transit problems before resorting to exotic solutions as double-deck freeways or costly subways.
