Just Call Athletes the Ugly Americans
The U.S. athletes at the opening ceremony bring to mind the child who mugs for her father’s video camera while on stage, misses steps, and ruins the dance number for all those hard-working children next to her.
In most cases, it is the fault of the parent behind the camera. Was this the case with the NBC cameras? Was there encouragement to be individuals, instead of the U.S. team? You bet there was.
Microphones on individual stars and cameras trying to find big-name athletes disrupted the picture.
Shame on NBC, shame on the USOC for not warning the athletes to “please not break ranks during the parade.”
