PREP FOOTBALL : Woodbridge Edges University
Woodbridge turned back a two-point conversion attempt by University in the final minutes Friday night to post a 14-12 nonleague victory at Irvine High.
University (0-3) closed the gap to 14-12 on a 15-yard run by Jim Roberson with 1:48 left in the game. However, running back Gary Smarr was stopped by the Warrior line at the 1-yard line as he tried to tie the score.
Smarr’s 1-yard run with 8:11 left in the first quarter had given University a 6-0 lead.
Woodbridge (3-0) finally took the lead, 7-6, on a 6-yard pass from Fred Schweer to P.A. Emerson with 3:56 left in the third quarter and Justin Fisher’s conversion kick.
With 3:30 left, the Warriors appeared ready to try a 21-yard field goal, but the snap to holder Alex Zaldivar was high. Zaldivar grabbed the ball and ran 11 yards for a touchdown to give Woodbridge a 14-6 lead.
However, University, following a 21-yard kickoff return by Marshall Francis, took the ball at its own 42 before moving it into scoring position.
Roberson ran for 111 yards on 23 carries, while Smarr picked up 53 yards on 13 attempts.
