Ed Dougherty closed quickly and caught defending champion Joey Sindelar to share the lead in the second round of the $500,000 B.C. Open golf tournament Friday at Endicott, N.Y.

Dougherty, who has never won in an 8-year career that was interrupted by a 4-year retirement, birdied the last three holes for a 4-under-par 67 that matched Sindelar at 10-under-par 132.

“I had a lot of birdie opportunities but didn’t putt well early in the round,” Dougherty said.”

Sindelar, who has won this tournament twice in the last three years, shot a 65 despite finishing with bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes.

Sindelar, who grew up just 35 miles from the 6,966-yard En-Joie Golf Club, displayed mixed emotions.

“It was a solid, legitimate 65,” he said. “I’m very pleased. It felt like I played 65. Bogeys never make you feel good, but with 36 holes to go, those two holes won’t be too significant.”

Roger Maltbie shot a 68, and former champion Don Pooley had a 66 to tie at 133. Bill Glasson was at 134.

First-round co-leader David Rummells, Brian Mogg, Rocco Mediate and Lance Ten Broeck were at 135.

Chip Beck, the PGA Tour’s leading money winner, missed the cut with a par 142. World Series of Golf winner Mike Reid and former Masters champion Larry Mize were also among those eliminated.

Sherri Turner shot a 6-under-par 66 to take the first-round lead in the $300,000 Santa Barbara Open, two shots ahead of Missie McGeorge and Betsy King.

Dawn Coe, Cathy Morse, Heather Farr, Gina Hull, Julie Inkster, Terry Jo Myers and Cathy Morse were tied for fourth place with 70s.

“I was putting very well,” said Turner, the LPGA tour’s leading money winner with $332,859. “In a three-day tournament, it’s very important to play well in the first round. And I’m usually a slow starter, which made today’s round even more satisfying.”

Turner had seven birdies and one bogey on the 6,311-yard Sandpiper Golf Club course and tied the tournament record. All her birdie putts were 12 feet or less.

Don Massengale birdied 3 holes on the back nine to shoot a 5-under-par 67 and take a 1-stroke lead in the first round of the $300,000 PGA Seniors Paine Webber Invitational at the Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.

Dave Hill and Butch Baird each shot a 68 to tie for second place.

Gene Littler, Homero Blancas and Bobby Nichols were at 69, followed by Bruce Crampton, Orville Moody, Bert Yancey, George Lanning and John Brodie at 70.
