And the Grateful Dead, who have recently tuned in to the plight of the Earth’s rain forests, teamed up with Bruce Hornsby and the Range, Suzanne Vega, and Daryl Hall and John Oates Saturday night on stage of New York’s Madison Square Garden for a fund-raiser to help save the ecosystems. The group pledged to make fighting deforestation a lifelong commitment. “We’ll probably be doing this until we’re pushing up daisies,” said rhythm guitarist Bob Weir. Added lead guitarist Jerry Garcia: “It is up to regular people, which we think we are, to do something about this.” Concert organizers hoped to raise $650,000 for the Rainforest Action Network, Greenpeace International, Cultural Survival and other environmental groups.
