A 20-year-old Mission Viejo man driving a compact car broadsided a Nissan truck Tuesday on Interstate 5, sending both vehicles into the center divider. Both drivers were injured.

The accident occurred about 10:15 a.m. when Douglas K. Clark was driving south at about 75 m.p.h. near Oso Parkway, said Roland Berry, California Highway Patrol investigating officer.

Clark was passing a car “when he realized there was a car in front of him and he was going too fast,” Barry said. Clark then hit the brakes, lost control of the car and clipped the rear of the car in front of him, Barry said.

Clark continued across the lane and into the fast lane, where he broadsided a pickup driven by Richard A. Seaberry, 55, of San Clemente.

Clark, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered major head injuries. A center divider cable went through the windshield of Seaberry’s car, “burning” his head and chest and severing his left little finger, Barry said. Clark was in serious condition at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo. Seaberry was in fair condition at the hospital.
