Stella Berkebile, senior captain of the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team, was named the school’s student-athlete for the 1987-88 academic year, and Allen Fox and Richard Gallien, co-head coaches of the men’s tennis team, were named coaches of the year.

Berkebile had a 3.75 grade point average (in a 4-point system) and led the Waves to the West Coast Athletic Conference championship, a berth in the NCAA Tournament and a No. 18 national ranking.

Last year’s men’s tennis team had a 25-5 record in dual matches and were No. 5, and senior Robby Weiss won the NCAA singles championship.

Suzanne Conklin and Gwen Abel, members of the Woman’s Sailing Assn. of Santa Monica, finished in fifth place in the three-month competition for the Adams Trophy, according to the association.

Conklin and Abel raced in contests at King Harbor in Redondo Beach, San Diego and Everett, Wash.

Dick Schaefer shot a 33 for nine holes to win the A flight at the Penmar Men’s Golf Club’s recent tournament. Other flight winners and their gross scores were Ray Fitzpatrick, B, 36; Howard Pedersen, C, 38; Ivan Waxman, D, 46, and Joe Brown, temporary handicaps, 37.

At the club’s 18-hole tournament at River Ridge Golf Course, Jimmy Clark captured the A flight with an 82, and Clff Claycomb shot an 87 to win B flight.

Stanley Aranoff of West Los Angeles shot a hole in one at Rancho Park Golf Course. He used a six iron at the nine-hole layout’s seventh hole.
