ZOO NEWS: Applications for the fall docent training workshop at the Santa Ana Zoo are being accepted. The sessions will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to noon, from Oct. 18 to Nov. 10.

The workshop provides an overview of the zoo’s animal collection and an introduction to zoology. Participants also learn how to conduct tours, how to work with the Zoomobile--which brings artifacts and live animals to schools--and how to teach Zoo Lab, a hands-on training session in the zoo’s education center.

For information on the workshop, or on other volunteer programs, call Friends of the Zoo, (714) 953-8555.

County teachers are invited to an evening reception at the zoo Oct. 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The reception will be held outdoors near the waterfowl pool.

Recently produced educational materials will be on display, as well as live animals from the Zoomobile collection. An open house will be held in the new Zoo Lab, and teachers can take evening walks by the zoo exhibits.

Hors d’oeuvres will be offered during the reception. Reservations are required; call the zoo’s education department, (714) 836-4000.

The Santa Ana Zoo is at 1801 E. Chestnut Ave., Santa Ana.
