The new Wilmington Boys and Girls club, recently awarded a $200,000 grant from the Los Angeles City Council, held its official opening and dedication Thursday with balloons, band music, a buffet lunch and ribbon-cutting.

The $1.5-million facility at 1444 West Q St.--the first permanent home for the club’s 1,800 members--opened for business June 27, but Executive Director Fred Johnson said he wanted to wait until after the summer to hold the dedication.

The 18,163-square-foot facility includes an Olympic-size basketball court and gymnasium, a library, multipurpose room, game room, computer room and an arts-and-crafts studio. Johnson said the city’s $200,000 will take care of the finishing touches such as landscaping and payment of subcontractors.
