Liberty Coin Wins Burke Futurity
Liberty Coin took the early lead and was never headed as he won the $325,000 Ed Burke Memorial Futurity quarter horse race by three-quarters of a length before 11,067 fans at Los Alamitos Saturday.
Liberty Coin, ridden by Steve Treasure, set a race record by covering the 350-yard course in 17.44 seconds. The old record of 17.52 was set by Kaweah Bar in 1968.
Rambac, the pre-race favorite at even money, finished second, and Hot-Blooded Hussy was third.
Liberty Coin, one of three horses in an entry owned by Jack and Linda Williams of Temecula, Calif., returned $5.20 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.40 to show.
Rambac, ridden by John Creager, returned $2.60, and Hot Blooded Hussy, ridden by Danny Cardoza and also part of the Williams’ entry, returned $2.40.
Liberty Coin, who won his fifth consecutive race with Saturday’s victory, earned $146,250 for finishing first.
