Race driver Randy Lanier was convicted of running a multimillion-dollar drug smuggling operation by a federal court jury in Benton, Ill.

Lanier, 34, the 1986 Indianapolis 500 rookie of the year, faces a mandatory life sentence without parole for running a drug smuggling ring that allegedly made $12 million a year from 1982 through 1985 on marijuana sales totaling more than 600,000 pounds.
