A proposal to ban the sale of alcoholic beverages, prompted by a bus crash in May that killed 27 people, was rejected Tuesday by the voters of Kentucky’s Carroll County.

Final, unofficial results showed 2,384 votes for continued liquor sales and 1,200 in favor of a ban.

The referendum was prompted by the fiery May 14 crash of a church bus and a pickup truck, which killed 24 children. The pickup truck driver, Larry Mahoney, has been charged with murder, drunken driving and other counts.
