A Marine was killed early Thursday when his car rolled over on Interstate 5, triggering a second accident when the wrecked car was struck by a semi-truck.
The victim, whose name was withheld by the military, was headed south when the accident occurred just north of the Gilman Drive exit, said a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman.
The car ran up an embankment and flipped over, coming to rest in the fast lane of the freeway. It is not known how long the car was there before the southbound truck smashed into it, the spokeswoman said.
The impact turned the truck on its side, but the unidentified driver suffered only minor injuries. He was treated at the scene, said the CHP spokeswoman.
The driver of the car was a 29-year-old gunnery sergeant at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, according to the coroner’s office.
