High School Roundup : Undermanned Camarillo Runs Past Simi Valley

Camarillo ran without its second and third runners in a Marmonte League dual cross-country meet against Simi Valley at Challenger Park in Simi Valley on Thursday, but the Scorpions cruised to a 15-45 victory.

Shawn Goetzinger clocked 16 minutes, 42 seconds over the 3-mile course as Camarillo, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section 4-A Division, swept the first 6 places.

Abe Valdez and Chad Malesich did not run because both were sick. In their absence, Joel Gonzalez and Shannon Brusca placed second and third in 17:12 and 17:27, respectively.

John Schnell (17:35) and Josh Gerry (17:59) rounded out the Scorpions’ scoring.

In other boys’ cross-country meets:

Granada Hills 17, Cleveland 42--Craig Lawson led Granada Hills to its second consecutive victory in the North Valley League meet at Pierce College.

Notre Dame 15, St. Genevieve 50--Ari Majamaki and Eddie Diaz tied for first place as Notre Dame swept the first 7 places in the San Fernando Valley League meet at Mulholland Trail.

Majamaki and Diaz ran 17:21 over the 3-mile course.

Chaminade 28, Bell-Jeff 29--Ken Ricci’s win paced Chaminade in the San Fernando Valley League meet at Chatsworth Park South. Ricci ran 16:46 over the 3-mile course.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Chaminade 17, Bell-Jeff 42--Katie Crespo led Chaminade in the San Fernando Valley League meet at Chatsworth Park South.

Louisville 26, Alemany 29--Jennifer Madden led Louisville to the upset victory in the San Fernando Valley League meet at O’Melveny Park, clocking 20:50 over the 3-mile course.

WATER POLO

Harvard 29, La Salle 3--Shane Loomis scored 8 goals and Sean Raymond, Eric Deutch, Jon Paul and Ryan Crosbie each added 3 goals at Harvard.

Royal 18, Westlake 7--Devin Hurst, Todd Hurst and Steve Robinson each scored 5 goals as the Highlanders coasted in a Marmonte League match at Royal.

VOLLEYBALL

Thousand Oaks d. Westlake, 15-13, 15-11, 15-1--Thousand Oaks remained in second place in the Marmonte League with a win at home. Amy Chellevold led the Lancers (10-1, 6-1) with 9 kills and Betsy Moore added 7.

Chatsworth d. El Camino Real, 15-9, 15-10--Jennifer Mischler hammered 8 kills as the Chancellors improved to 4-0 in West Valley League play.

Taft d. Kennedy, 12-15, 16-14, 16-14--Taft rebounded to improve to 3-1 in Northwest Valley Conference play. Jane Kim led the Toreadors with 18 kills.

Louisville d. St. Genevieve, 15-4, 15-0, 15-8--Jenny Calfo had 7 kills and Erika Lusk added 5 to lead Louisville in a San Fernando Valley League match.

Newbury Park d. Channel Islands, 15-1, 15-9, 15-3--Keri Peterson’s 5 kills led the Panthers in the Marmonte League match.

Chaminade d. Alemany, 15-8, 16-14, 15-17, 13-15, 15-7--Alissa Levisohn had 10 kills and Kelly Coyle had 5 kills and 4 blocks for the Eagles at home.

TENNIS

Chaminade 16, Bell-Jeff 2--Abigail Villana swept 3 matches and Laura Nichols and Jill Hudson, Chaminade’s top doubles team, also won 3 matches for the Eagles.

Kennedy 5, El Camino Real 2--The Golden Cougars (7-2, 3-0) swept all 3 doubles matches and split the singles matches to remain undefeated in Northwest Valley Conference play.
