Credit Consultant Gets 2-Year Term for Fraud

Share

A Woodland Hills woman was sentenced Friday to two years in jail for swindling 17 people out of more than $13,000 by promising to help them obtain loans.

Renee Conner, 33, also was ordered to reimburse her victims, was placed on five years probation and banned by Los Angeles Municipal Court Commissioner Barry Kohn from any involvement in the credit consultancy business.

Conner charged victims between $150 and $2,000 to get loans for them “and did nothing but pocket the money,” City Atty. James K. Hahn said Friday.

She ran the scheme through three Woodland Hills businesses --Royal Financial Consultants at 20750 Ventura Blvd., Royal Financial Counseling at 22111 Erwin St., and Beneficial Financing Funding at 23934 Calvert St.

Conner, who began serving her sentence immediately, pleaded no contest to four counts of grand theft, one count of false and misleading statements and five violations of the Credit Services Act.

She was arrested in November as she arrived for an appointment at the Panorama City office of her federal parole officer. She had been on parole as a result of a 1983 conviction for possession of stolen mail involving credit cards, Deputy City Atty. Sue Frauens said. That parole has since been revoked.
