Southwest Roundup : Grovey Lifts Arkansas Past Texas, 27-24

Quarterback Quinn Grovey ran 21 yards for a touchdown and set up 2 other scores to lead 17th-ranked Arkansas to a 27-24 Southwest Conference victory over Texas Saturday at Austin, Tex.

The Razorbacks improved their record to 6-0 and remained atop the SWC at 3-0. The Longhorns dropped to 3-3 and 1-1.

Grovey, who was twice knocked out of the game with injuries, gave Arkansas a 24-3 lead with his third-quarter touchdown before the Longhorns mounted a rally.

Texas’ Mark Murdock threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Keith Cash and completed 2 long passes before Eric Metcalf’s 1-yard scoring plunge in the third. Murdock also threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Tony Jones with 4:30 to play.

Houston 82, Tulsa 28--David Dacus threw 4 touchdown passes and Chuck Weatherspoon ran for 3 more at Houston as the Cougars scored their highest point total since a 100-6 victory over Tulsa a decade ago.

Dacus completed 20 of 25 for 368 yards, including touchdown plays of 20, 39, 39, and 47 yards. Weatherspoon rushed for 126 yards, including touchdown runs of 13, 18, and 1 yards.

Houston led, 45-0, at halftime and later, 75-0, before Tulsa (1-5) scored 28 points in the last quarter.

Texas Tech 38, Rice 36--Wingback Tyrone Thurman caught 2 touchdown passes and scored a third time on a 75-yard punt return to lead the Red Raiders to victory at Houston.

The teams combined for 1,109 yards, including a school-record 642 for Rice.

The Owls are 0-5 and 0-3 this season.

Texas A&M; 28, Baylor 14--Freshman fullback Robert Wilson scored 2 touchdowns, and quarterback Bucky Richardson ran 15 yards for the go-ahead score with 4:33 left to play as the Aggies won at College Station, Tex.

Texas A&M; is 3-3 and 3-0. Baylor is 4-3 and 0-3.
