Local News in Brief : Schools Post Small Gain in Students

Enrollment in the Los Angeles Unified School District rose by 2,529 students to 592,273 this fall, a increase of 0.4% over last year, a district report released Monday showed.

The largest increases of new students were in the San Fernando Valley and the district’s southeast region, according to the report, while the Westside, South-Central and Mid-City areas grew slightly. Enrollment declined slightly in the district’s Harbor area.

District officials, speculating that the immigration reform law might still be causing many immigrant families to keep their children out of school, had been anticipating a modest rise or even a dip in this fall’s enrollment. The district received 20,000 new students between 1985 and 1987, but enrollment growth tailed off last year to fewer than 2,000 new pupils.
