CAMPAIGN ’88 : Jackson, Kitty Dukakis Speak at Celebrity Bash

They paid to hear Chevy Chase crack jokes and Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand sing. But it was special requests by Jesse Jackson and Kitty Dukakis that appeared to move the audience the most.

“We can still win this election; we have the numbers,” Jackson shouted, to a standing ovation. “Keep hope alive.”

And Mrs. Dukakis pleaded with the more than 700 people present not to write off her husband Michael’s presidential candidacy just because recent polls show him trailing Republican George Bush by increasing margins.

“Don’t give up the fight,” Kitty Dukakis said.

The pleas came at an $800,000 fund-raising bash put on Sunday night by the Hollywood Women’s Political Committee at the lavish Beverly Hills estate of movie producer Ted Field.

Texas state Treasurer Ann Richards noted that, when Bush referred to her in last week’s debate, he held his hands around his head in an effort to describe her distinctive hairdo.

“Imagine how he would have tried to describe Dolly Parton,” Richards said, getting a big laugh.
