Shirley Temple’s Parade Encore

Half a century after she headed the 50th Rose Parade as the nation’s favorite child film star, Shirley Temple Black will repeat her grand marshal role for the 100th parade Jan. 2. She was 10 for the 1939 procession, so . . .

“It’s the best-smelling parade one can be in,” Black said Wednesday as she was showered with confetti during the announcement in Pasadena’s Tournament House. “It’s an awesome, wonderful job, and I’m looking forward to it with great anticipation.” She recalled that in her first Rose Parade, she had to go to bed early the night before and that “it was very dark when I first got up in the morning. It was pitch black.”

As in 1939, Jan. 1 will fall on Sunday, so the parade will be Monday.
