Reggie Otero, longtime special assignment scout with the Dodgers, died in his sleep Thursday night, the Dodgers announced. He was 73.

Otero, who was based in Miami, scouted in Latin America and handled special assignments for the Dodgers during the last 15 years.

During his 53 years in baseball, Otero played first base for the Los Angeles Angels in the old Pacific Coast League and for other minor league teams. In his one major league season, with the Chicago Cubs in 1945, he batted .391.

Otero is survived by his wife, Carmen, and three sons.
