CAMPAIGN ’88 : Dukakis Workers Rally

Share

Democratic nominee Michael S. Dukakis may be trailing in the polls in California, but that did not seem to faze the more than 1,000 cheering, stomping Dukakis volunteers who showed up Saturday at Santa Monica City College.

These precinct leaders heard their names read off in honor-roll fashion by actors Lloyd Bridges and Jeff Bridges.

“You will be the stars of this campaign,” said Lloyd Bridges as he urged the precinct leaders to turn out the Democratic vote in their assigned areas of Los Angeles County on Election Day.

Mayor Tom Bradley and Atty. Gen. John Van de Kamp also exhorted the precinct leaders, with Bradley comparing Dukakis to the world champion Dodgers.

“May I remind you that back in the summer no one gave the Dodgers a chance of winning the World Series,” Bradley said.

The county precinct leaders are part of a statewide voter turnout effort being mounted on Dukakis’ behalf that is the most extensive in California history.
