Reagan Last Hurdle to Manassas Victory
In the tax bill passed early Saturday by Congress is a measure to halt construction of a shopping center next to the Manassas National Battlefield Park in northern Virginia, leaving one last hurdle for the amendment--President Reagan’s signature.
The Reagan Administration has vocally opposed the Manassas legislation, but the amendment was not expected to bring a presidential veto of the tax bill.
The Manassas amendment directs the federal government to purchase from developers 542 acres next to the 4,600-acre park site of the two major Civil War battles in Prince William County.
Hazel-Peterson Cos. of Fairfax and its partners are planning a regional shopping mall, 560 homes, a hotel and office buildings on the tract.
