Halloween Events

More than 15,000 people are expected to participate in Halloween festivities in West Hollywood on Monday, including an informal street party late-night costume parade for adults at Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards, city officials said.

Officials said Santa Monica Boulevard between Almont Drive and La Cienega Boulevard will be closed to traffic from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. to accommodate the celebration.

The Beverly Hills Family Y will have its annual Halloween overnight party for children ages 5 to 14 on Friday at the Y, 9930 Santa Monica Blvd. Activities will include swimming, games, a movie, a costume party and a trip to Magic Mountain. Children must be dropped off at the Y by 8 p.m. Friday and picked up by 6 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $30 for members and $50 for non-members. Children are also expected to bring at least $5 for lunch at Magic Mountain and $3 for dinner at the Y. For information call (213) 553-0731.

The Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department will offer a variety of Halloween activities at Westside parks from Friday through Monday. Planned are carnivals, costume parades, refreshments, dances and haunted houses. A “safe Halloween” trick or treat is scheduled for Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fisherman’s Village, 13755 Fiji Way in Marina del Rey. A costume contest, with divisions for infant to 10 years, 11 to 18 years, and 19 years to senior citizen, will begin at 7:30 p.m. In addition, a jazz concert for parents featuring Steve Lowry and Topshelf will run from 4 to 8 p.m.

The Santa Monica Chamber Orchestra will begin its 1988-89 season with a Halloween concert on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1220 2nd St. in Santa Monica.

The orchestra, in costume, will play several baroque works. A prize will be awarded for the best children’s costume. Refreshments will be served. For more information call (213) 478-6078.

The Broadway Gymnastic Foundation, 1657 12th St., will sponsor a Halloween festival on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be face painting, gigantic hopscotch, pony rides, team pumpkin-carving contests, the world’s longest balance beam walk and a coaches dunk tank. The 22nd annual Larchmont Village Family Fair is scheduled Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Activities will include dancing, pony rides, a petting zoo, merry-go-round, and 50 assorted game and food booths.

A Halloween costume contest is slated for youngsters 2 to 13. Children must register by noon.

Bay Vista Convalescent Hospital is inviting all young pirates, ghosts, goblins, monsters and other costumed creatures to join the residents for a special Halloween event. Bay Vista is offering a Trick-or-Treat-Safely program for local children from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at the facility. Resident “grandmothers” and “grandfathers” will be ready with treats while children “trick” their way from room to room. This special Halloween program provides a safe place for children to trick or treat.

The Culver City Recreation and Leisure Services Division of the Department of Human Services will operate a haunted house Saturday through Oct. 31 at the Veterans Park Municipal Pool, 4117 Overland Ave., Culver City, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Admission to the haunted house, whose theme is “Nightmare on Film Street” and features sets from various horror films, is $3 for people over 13 years old and $2 for those 12 and under. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Ken Sagoes, who was featured in the movies “Nightmare on Elm Street III and IV,” will make an appearance at the park’s teen center from 4 to 7 p.m. and will be one of many live actors in the haunted house.
