SportsScope : Bruins’ Top-Ranked Women Spikers Face Tough Competition in Pac-10 Tournement

The top-ranked UCLA women’s volleyball team (19-0 and 11-0 in the Pacific 10 Conference) will play host to No. 6 Brigham Young, No. 12 USC and Colorado State in the first Pac-10 Challenge tournament on Friday and Saturday at Pauley Pavilion.

On Friday, the Bruins will open at 6 p.m. against Colorado State and USC will meet BYU at 8. On Saturday, USC will face Colorado State at 6 p.m., and UCLA goes against BYU at 8.

Last week the Bruins won three road matches, outlasting UC Santa Barbara in five games and defeating Oregon in four and Oregon State in three.

The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team (8-12 overall and 6-0 in the West Coast Athletic Conference) will play tonight at the University of San Francisco (5-11, 3-4), Friday night (10-28) at St. Mary’s (2-15, 0-7) and Wednesday night (11-2) at UC Santa Barbara.

Last week the Waves defeated USF in four games, handed Santa Clara its first conference loss in three games and lost to San Diego State in five.

The UCLA men’s soccer team (10-4-2) will play tonight at Nevada Las Vegas (9-5-2) and entertain Washington (12-3-1) at 2 p.m. Sunday at North Soccer Field.

Last week the Bruins tied San Diego State for the championship of the UCLA/Metropolitan Life tournament. Both defeated Navy and played scoreless ties against South Carolina.

The No. 2 UCLA water polo team will face Pepperdine at 9:10 a.m. Saturday in one of the opening matches of the Cal State Long Beach Invitational at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach. The tournament continues through Sunday. Other teams in the field include Stanford, California, USC and the 49ers.

The Waves will play host to Iona at 1:30 p.m. today at Raleigh Runnels Pool.

The UCLA women’s cross-country team will compete in the Pac-10 championship Monday. Defending champion Oregon, ranked second nationally, is the favorite; UCLA is ranked No. 12.

The UCLA men’s and women’s swim teams will play host to Mission Viejo in a dual meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at UCLA’s Sunset Canyon Recreation Center pool.

The UCLA women’s golf team will compete Friday through Sunday in the Stanford Invitational.
