Planting 100 Million Trees to Cool the Greenhouse Effect

Share

The columns extoling the virtues of tree planting were timely and to the point. Trees and greenery not only remove carbon dioxide from the air but provide humanity with many other amenities. Perhaps more to the point than planting trees would be to preserve the trees and greenery which nature and our previous agricultural way of life in California have provided. The trees and greenery are being sacrificed to the profits of those who call themselves developers, but in many cases, could more aptly be called exploiters.

It is estimated that, in Southern California, we have lost over 90% of our evergreen oak trees to developers. The early agriculturists frequently planted their groves and orchards around these trees.

There is a continuing but usually losing battle with the municipal and county planners, zoning enforcement agencies, and the developers to protect and preserve these trees. Our elected and appointed officials need more concern for and understanding of the processes of nature and their effect on human well-being, and so do the voters.
