2 From County in Running for Teacher of Year

Two San Diego County teachers are among the four finalists for 1989 California Teacher of the Year, the state Department of Education announced Tuesday in Sacramento.

They are Joan L. McCollom, a special education teacher from Albert Schweitzer School in the San Diego Unified School District, and Joe Alfonso Smith, a science teacher from Olive Peirce Junior High in Ramona.

Joining the two San Diego-area teachers are Sharon Baker from the Sacramento Unified School District and Jenlane Gee from the Empire Union High School District in Modesto.

The four were picked from eight semifinalists. The California winner will be selected Nov. 15, will receive $15,000 and will compete in the national competition to be held in Washington. The three other finalists will receive $4,000 each.

The money is provided by Teachers Management and Investment Corp. of Newport Beach.
