Local News in Brief : 5 Finalists Named for County Fire Chief

The names of three members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department and two fire officials from out of state were submitted as finalists for the job of fire chief to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. The board agreed to interview the candidates Dec. 1 and 6 to find a successor to John Englund, 57, who retired Monday.

The list, winnowed from 58 candidates, includes Assistant Fire Chief John M. Cummings, 48; Deputy Fire Chief David L. Hanson, 50, and Deputy Fire Chief William Zeason, 49.

Cummings, a 22-year veteran, is in charge of a $36-million project to centralize the Fire Department’s dispatching system. Hanson, a 26-year veteran, heads the administrative services bureau. Zeason, a 27-year veteran, commands the operations bureau.

The other finalists are P. Michael Freeman, assistant chief of emergency operations for the Dallas Fire Department, and Carlos E. Perez, chief of the bureau of emergency medical services for Metropolitan Dade County Fire and Rescue Services in Florida.
