Local News in Brief : Supervisors to Vote on Curfew for Youths
Los Angeles County officials recommended imposing a 10 p.m. curfew on youths in the county’s unincorporated areas, and the Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to vote on the proposal next week.
Supervisor Mike Antonovich and Gregory Thompson, chief deputy district attorney, outlined a new curfew ordinance at a news conference. It will replace an earlier law that resembles a Long Beach law that was struck down as unconstitutional by the state Court of Appeal last June.
The court ruled that the Long Beach law, like the Los Angeles ordinance, should have made allowances for minors to remain out after 10 p.m. provided they are not loitering. The new version of the county curfew law includes exceptions for youths participating in legitimate activities or waiting for parents, Thompson said.
The curfew, if approved by the board, will affect people under 18. Last summer, the Los Angeles City Council modified a similar curfew law to meet objections raised by the state court.
