Gagliano’s Signing With 49ers Nullified

It appeared that Bob Gagliano, the well-traveled former Hoover High and Glendale College quarterback, had once again gone from the road to the fold.

The National Football League vagabond was signed by the San Francisco 49ers last Friday. It was the third time in his career that he had been signed by the team.

But the third time wasn’t a charm for Gagliano. Just hours after the signing, the acquisition was disallowed because of a technicality. The NFL prohibits a team from re-signing any player in the same season in which he has claimed free agency after being released by that team.

San Francisco had been seeking another quarterback after Joe Montana became unable to play because of injuries to his back, elbow and ribs.

On Oct. 17, the 49ers signed former San Diego State quarterback Todd Santos.

Gagliano, 30, was waived for the third consecutive year by the 49ers in August. He was subsequently signed and released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the start of the regular season.
