Arts School Seeks Students for 2nd Term

For the first time since its 1985 opening, the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts is seeking students to start in mid-year.

According to D’liefe Melendrez, assistant principal for administrative services, the school hopes to expand its student body from 389 students to 425. Applications are being accepted for the second semester of the 1988-89 school year.

The public arts high school offers majors in dance, music, theater and the visual arts. It also offers a full academic program that prepares students for college. Last year, 90% of the school’s graduates were accepted at colleges, universities or arts institutes, school officials said.

Those wishing to be considered for second-semester admission must submit an application and pass an audition or portfolio review.

Applicants should be in 10th or 11th grade, live in Los Angeles County and have at least a C average with no F grades for the past two semesters. Applications are available from the school, which is on the campus of Cal State University, Los Angeles. Applications are due by Dec. 15.

Students who meet basic admission requirements will be invited to audition or present their portfolios before a panel of professional artists and arts educators. Auditions and presentations will be held Jan. 7 on the Cal State L.A. campus.

“We’re looking for raw, talented, enthusiastic kids with that special spark--no experience necessary,” Melendrez said.
