Local News in Brief : Reward for Sea Lion’s Killers
An anonymous donor has increased to $1,500 the reward being offered for information leading to the conviction of the people who killed a California sea lion by feeding it an explosive device hidden inside a mackerel.
The 400-pound sea lion, which boaters in the Redondo Beach marina called Bobo, was found dead two weeks ago.
A $500 reward had been offered by the Torrance office of the Fund for Animals Inc., a nationwide animal rights group. An unnamed contributor Thursday added another $1,000 to the reward, officials said.
Bobo is the second sea lion in recent weeks to be killed in King Harbor. On Sunday, Bruno, a 300-pound California sea lion, died of gunshot wounds sustained about two months ago.
The deaths of the federally protected mammals are being investigated by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Maliciously killing a sea lion is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $20,000 and a year in jail.
