A couple sought by local authorities for allegedly faking the man’s death three years ago were apprehended Thursday in San Bernardino County, authorities reported.

Gregory Myler and his girlfriend, Janice Weidmeier, were arrested by sheriff’s deputies. They are being held on $250,000 bail each and are expected to be transferred to San Diego within the next several days.

Myler, 35; Weidmeier, 31, and Myler’s wife, Jenness, 37, allegedly faked Myler’s death and collected nearly $300,000 in insurance payments and Social Security survivor benefits. A drunken Myler supposedly fell 50 feet into the heavy surf from Sunset Cliffs on Sept. 15, 1985.

Prosecutors filed charges against the three two months ago, saying testimony from children and neighbors persuaded them that the story was a hoax.

Jenness Myler has been in custody in San Diego since September and has pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy, four of insurance fraud and four of grand theft. Similar charges have been filed against her husband and Weidmeier.
