Bush Wins in Straw Vote of Americans at Harry’s Bar in Paris
George Bush beat Michael S. Dukakis today in a traditional straw ballot by American patrons of Harry’s New York Bar in Paris.
A final count of the ballots, which have been piling up in a locked and chained box since Oct. 27, gave Republican Bush a clear victory over Democrat Dukakis with 579 votes to 471.
The straw vote, held in the 77-year-old bar since 1924, has correctly predicted the result of every presidential election except one, when it gave Republican Gerald R. Ford the presidency over Democrat Jimmy Carter in 1976 by two votes.
