STATWATCH : Redell on Target for Honors After Display of Accuracy

Share

Crespi High’s Ron Redell was selected an All-Del Rey League defensive back last season, although he played much of the season at quarterback.

This season, after 3 near-perfect performances in league games, he may have sewn up the league’s first-team quarterback position.

Redell, a senior, has completed 37 of 45 passes for 417 yards and 3 touchdowns in 3 league victories. He leads Crespi (5-4, 3-0) into Saturday’s game against Loyola (9-0, 3-0), which will decide the league title.

In Crespi’s 15-8 loss to Loyola last year, Redell completed 22 of 29 for 171 yards and a touchdown. Two of his passes were intercepted by all-conference defensive back Jimmy Klein, also a senior this season.

With 190 completions, Redell has tied the school career mark set in 1980-81 by Rich Ferraro. Redell needs 3 more completions to equal the single-season mark of 120 set by Babe Laufenberg (1977), now of the San Diego Chargers.

Rushing: Although Chip Grant (1,900 yards in 1987) has moved to Cal State Fullerton, the North Hollywood running attack remains productive. The Huskies, powered by Mike Goldsmith and Tim Sutton, have rushed for 1,413 yards. Goldsmith has gained 728 yards in 165 carries and scored 11 touchdowns, and Sutton has gained 528 yards and 3 touchdowns in 83 carries.

Montclair Prep’s Michael Jones, who has rushed for 1,177 yards and 13 touchdowns in 170 carries, is averaging 181.8 yards a game in Alpha League play. Jones has had 2 consecutive 200-yard games.

Offense: When Monroe outscored Reseda, 15-0, in the second half of Friday night’s 28-10 victory, it marked the first time this season that Reseda has been outscored in the second half. Before the game, Reseda (7-1) had outscored opponents, 72-7, in the second half.
